Cuckooland Tented Lodge, near Ruhija section, at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is believed to be one of the best safari lodges for birdwatching in Uganda. Cuckooland Tented Lodge is surrounded with more than 270 bird species which have been seen in and around the lodge. These include the 8 Albertine Rift Endemics and many other uncommon species with limited range.
Of all these bird species, around 50 are residents in the 10 acres of the lodge’s grounds. They are virtually guaranteed to be sighted by any keen bird-watcher during a stay of 24 hours or more. These include sunbirds, greenbul, flycatchers, grey-throated barbet, narrow-tailed starling, black-billed weaver, grey-headed negrofinch, Luhder’s bush-shrike, grey-capped warbler, and Bocage’s bush-shrike among others.
Many of these species can be seen from the verandah of the tent-houses, which are situated around 20 metres away from the edge of the forest. The verandahs and the restaurant overlook Bwindi forest, with stunning panoramic views over the forest below, so you have no need of paying any park fees for birdwatching in Bwindi.

Staying at Cuckooland Tented Lodge in Bwindi, gives you a good chance of seeing chimps and five other primate species. You will also see more than 70 labeled, mainly indigenous tree species, sculpture gardens, gym and natural swimming ponds, and appreciate why Cuckooland is the number one birdwatching lodge in Uganda.
While at the lodge, guests can have a 10 minutes walk down from the car park to the lodge, to reach such an idyllic situation. That’s why Cuckooland is not suitable for the disabled, the elderly and those who are not able to manage a little hill-walking.
The lodge is only a 10 minutes drive away from ‘The neck’, and 30 minutes drive from Ruhija section, which are both excellent areas for gorilla trekking and bird watching encounters.
Please note that Cuckooland has 4 double tent-houses, so the maximum sleeping capacity for guests is 8 per night.
