Butogota town is situated in Kanungu district in western Uganda, which is approximately 450 km from Kampala, the capital of Uganda. The town borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the west.
Butogota town is a main trade center that is developing at a high speed because of the overlooking primeval Bwindi impenetrable forest. The town has become a popular gateway of choice for travelers heading to Bwindi, which is home to half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas.
Being so close to the border it exchanges its goods with the neighbors of DRC which borders Uganda in the west. As a result, this has contributed to its rapid development.
The town is blessed with fertile soils which favor tea farming, which has improved the standard of living for employers, employees, and out growers. In addition, the people of Butogota have harvested much in agriculture, through both commercial and domestic farming. In turn, this has also contributed to enough food in their homes.
Furthermore, the town has two associations of tea factories; the Kayonza tea grower’s factory and the Kigezi highland tea factory. Both are run by Ugandans thus providing jobs to many people.

The town is strategically located on the main road which connects to Kasese and Queen Elizabeth National Park, mainly the southern Ishasha sector. This is famous for the tree- climbing lion experience. As a result, this has acted as a stopover for many tourists and has also contributed to the economic development of Butogota town.
